An addition expands the house to create the new foyer and expanded owner suite. The expanded foyer adds another offset to the stepped roof footprint. A similar set of offsets define the front entry walk providing a rhythmic approach path. Two conventional closets are provided, the millwork surrounding the desk becomes shared between husband and wife as closet space and is all encased in stained wood cabinetry such that the “ours” closet function is actually part of the bedroom itself rather than a conventional closet. Two additions over the years had eroded the original design intent. 50 years of wear and tear had taken their toll. Axios was hired to revive and transform the house while maintaining its original design integrity and room layout. Corner windows are strategically located to enhance diagonal vistas and perceptually enlarge the space. This is particularly successful in the stair where two corner windows are located on opposite corners, creating a strong diagonal tension. Wood millwork panels and ceilings provide warmth and are used as framing devices to organize the internal and external views. He is a registered architect involved in non-traditional practice for the last 20+ years and wanted to leverage Axios’ extensive residential experience. There is no buildable area on the rear of the property due to stream buffer restrictions. Continuing the existing mid-century modern post and beam structure and infilling with variously proportioned panels creates a glowing lantern at night and amplified the street presence of the entire house. The vertical height of the addition now aligns it’s height to be comparable to other houses along the street. The original cash wrap station dominated the entry to the shop and de- emphasized the merchandise. The cash wrap desk itself was showing over 15 years of wear and tear.
