Fantasy Island

FineHomebuilding Magazine sponsored a "Fantasy Island" contest in late 2009.  Axios received a merit award for the island in the Sagamore House kitchen.

This narrow island is not large, but it works hard at the center of the kitchen.  A practical recatangular shape is really part of a larger circular composition that includes the adjacent eat-in booth and table.

The glass worktop, set at counter height, "disappears" to fully reveal the circular plane carving throught the island.  The wood sub-top, set at table top height, provides a great cookbook station protected from the messiness of food preparation.  The curving blue surface brings out the curve visually.  Had this been wood, it would have been visually lost.  The sub-top extends beyond the glass to provide a display shelf...a wonderful place for flowers when entertaining.

A combination of open shelves and closed cabinets provides functional storage and serving dish display.  An angled door on the working side of the island reveals a narrow cabinet for cookie sheet storage.  It is a whimsical detail that always garners attention from guests.
