| Sited adjacent to a small lake, the Capsule provides a place of refuge and study for its owner. The existing house, a conventional suburban tract home, provided no stylistic cues to draw from. Sloped roofs and painted siding & trim were selected for practicality and to create continuity between the original house and addition.
The wood siding is prominent on the street side. Moving to the rear, the Capsule develops a modified language that harkens to a boathouse precedent. The simple, symmetrical gable hovers above the base. The base is clad in Corten panels, continuing the horizontality of wood siding, but now at a different scale and with a rich natural patina of rusted metal that harmonizes with the existing brick.
A series of wood bents supports the floor as it floats above the ground plane.
